Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Mark, the Evangelist.

The name Evangelist signifies someone who proclaims either in writing, or by speaking the Gospel, that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, and, He invites us to share in His life, which begins at Baptism, the proof of our believing in Him.  Depicted in art with a lion, representing Jesus as King, and with the pen, and book, being inspired by the Holy Spirit to write about Christ.  St. Mark is referenced in a few places in the New Testament.  One as the young man who runs away naked after the soldiers reached out to grab him the Garden of Gethsemane, as the son of the woman who owns the house where the upper room was located, and, as being the cousin of St. Barnabas, and, a co-worker with St. Paul, and, then St. Peter in Rome.

Through this association with the Apostles, we can see that what is contained in today's Gospel of Jesus' commission to the Apostles to preach the Gospel (to evangelize) is being fulfilled by St. Mark.  May he intercede for us also to evangelize the world about Jesus Christ.

God bless you,
Fr. Robert
