In celebrating today’s Solemnity of the Birth of John the Baptist, we are being given the opportunity to see the gift of life through God’s eyes.  He is revealing to us that He has a specific plan for each of our lives.  And, this plan is that we come to know Him, and, allow Him to work through us, as cooperators in bringing  about His plan of salvation.  The real tragedy that is gripping our country today is that people do not know this truth, and, so, we see the results borne out in acts of violence, destruction, hatred and division.

What is even more tragic is that people don’t even want to hear about this truth, for if they know it, they may have to let go of their thirst for self achieved power, and, instead open themselves to God’s plans.  St. John the Baptist shows us that true greatness comes not from our trying to claim it, or grab it for ourselves, for many thought that He was the Messiah, and wanted to confer honor on him, but, he humbly states he is not, and, instead Jesus calls him great.  But, Jesus will go on to say that everyone  in the Kingdom of God is greater than John.  Let us pray through the intercession of St. John the Baptist that all those caught up in the kingdom of evil manifested in all of these acts of violence, may instead see their longed for greatness attainable instead as children of God.

God bless you,
Fr. Robert
