The Roman Centurion in today’s Gospel, and, St. Cyril of Alexandria provide us with two examples of faith in Jesus Christ.  And what is this faith that is professed?  It is that we can believe everything that comes forth from the mouth of God as being able to accomplish what is said.

The centurion is able to understand this because he can relate it to his own experience as one who has authority to see what he says be accomplished.  His profession of faith is now memorialized in every Mass before we receive Holy Communion. St. Cyril, a defender of the faith in many ways, is especially known for his defense of Mary being called the Mother of God, since Jesus is God.  He defended this truth against the heresy of Nestorius, who said that Jesus was not fully divine.

To believe that is to deny the very foundation of the Catholic Faith because it denies the truth of the Incarnation.  Let us learn from these two men today the importance of believing Who Jesus Christ truly Is, so that we can be witnesses to others.

God bless you,
Fr. Robert
